Chicago Boy, 14, Fatally Shot While Helping His Father Move

(CBS) -- A 14-year-old honor student was killed in a drive-by shooting this weekend while helping his father move.

Demarco Webster was fatally shot outside a South Side apartment building. Family members say two gunmen opened fire, striking the eighth-grader in the side.

The incident occurred early Saturday in the 500 block of South Central, police said. The gunshot victim was taken to Loyola Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Demarco's mother, Akesha Hester, believes it was a case of mistaken identity. The youth had just celebrated his birthday on Oct. 17.

"I had no clue that he was celebrating his last birthday – no clue," Hester tells CBS 2.

His mother says Demarco loved basketball and was planning to try out for the team at Jensen.
