Man Charged In Norridge Mall Shooting

(CBS) -- Prosecutors are pressing a laundry list of charges against a West Humboldt Park man in the Thursday shootings in the parking lot of the Harlem-Irving Plaza shopping mall, in Norridge.

Norridge Police Chief Jim Jobe said the 31-year-old suspect, Everett Harris, of 1151 N. Keeler Av., is the ex-boyfriend of one of the victims. When the 29-year-old woman objected to Harris, whose driver's license is revoked, taking her two children and her car on a trip to the mall, he allegedly shoved her out of the car and drove off anyway. A short time later, there was a confrontation in the mall's parking lot. During the ensuing melee, Harris allegedly shot her in the face, shoulder and wrists, and her 36-year-old cousin in the groin.

"He fled the scene, but he was subsequently apprehended by the Chicago Police Department in the area near Fullerton and Cicero about half an hour later," Jobe said.

A gun, believed to be the one used in the shootings, was found on the passenger seat. Harris had left the children behind at the mall. They were checked at Lutheran General Hospital, in Park Ridge, and released to the custody of relatives.
Harris is not the father of the children, Jobe said.

Both the woman and her cousin are recovering from their wounds at Lutheran General Hospital. Charges filed by prosecutors against Harris include attempted murder, aggravated battery, aggravated kidnaping, carjacking, driving on a revoked license and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Jobe said the shooting was the first at the mall in more than 35 years.
Harris was ordered held with out bond Saturday in Central Bond Court.
