Cardinal George To Be Questioned About Sex Abuse Cases

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cardinal Francis George sits Thursday for videotaped questioning related to predator ex-priest Daniel McCormack.

Archdiocesan spokesperson Colleen Dolan said George has sat for several rounds of such questioning, known as depositions. Dolan said lawyers for the alleged victims want a video record this time in the event that the Cardinal dies or is too ill to testify in court.

The Cardinal has finished his latest round of chemotherapy for cancer in his right kidney, and Dolan said he is regaining strength and is back to a full schedule.

George has already said he should have pushed harder for details about the allegations against McCormack, who was defrocked in 2007, entered a guilty plea in three cases and was sentenced to a five-year prison term.

McCormack is jailed without bond on the latest charge lodged against him, an aggravated criminal sexual abuse charge involving a boy who was 10 years old at the time, in 2005.

He has been held continuously since he was first jailed. He was at a state mental health facility until his latest arrest.
