Car Owners Can Get Compensation From Chicago For Pothole Damage

CHICAGO (CBS) -- If a Chicago pothole damages your car, you can apply for compensation from the city.

Within the past week, the City Clerk's office has received nearly a hundred claims from car owners whose tires were flattened or suffered other damage from all the potholes cropping up on city streets.

Patrick Corcoran with the City Clerk's office says you can file that claim through their website.

"The main components of this include information about the date, time and location of the incident and a paid receipt or two estimates for the damage repairs."

He says you can submit photos but they're not required. It might take a while to get your money.

"Once the claims' packet is submitted, it's turned over to the City Council's Finance Committee. They have staff that provide information about how that's being processed and how soon people can receive their reimbursements."

Within the past couple of weeks, city crews have been working seven days a week, filling thousands of potholes.
