Man Dies After Car Drives Into Quarry Pond In Ottawa

Updated 06/17/14 - 06:17 a.m.

OTTAWA, Ill. (CBS) -- A man died Monday night when his car plunged into a water-filled quarry in southwest suburban Ottawa.

LaSalle County Sheriff's police said the car was heading west on Main Street, when it crossed the t-intersection of Boyce Memorial Drive, crashed through a fence, and went into a quarry owned by U.S. Silica Co.

The quarry was filled with sand and water, hampering efforts to find the car. Around 10:45 p.m., crews were able to use heavy rigging equipment to haul the car out of the quarry and onto a flatbed tow truck.

The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

It was unclear what caused the car to crash through the fence and into the quarry.
