Car Catches Fire In Lake Shore Drive Apartment Garage

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A car caught on fire at an apartment high-rise early Thursday in the Near North Side neighborhood.

Firefighters responded to the incident about 3 a.m. in the 900 block of North Lake Shore Drive, said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro. The vehicle - which was parked in the basement - sent smoke through the building's ventilation shaft, Alfaro added.

A 2-year-old boy was transported to Lurie Children's Hospital in good condition and is expected to be released later Thursday, Alfaro said. Police added the measure was for "precautionary reasons."

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Chicago Fire Media Affairs said some people "self-evacuated" the building.

The fire was struck out about an hour later, authorities said.

How the car caught on fire was not immediately known early Thursday.
