Cabbies Plan Decal To Honor Slain Taxi Driver
(CBS) -- Taxi drivers in the northern suburbs have taken up a cause to remember a fellow driver who was shot to death while on the job.
WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports cab driver Joe Davis has launched a private effort to raise money to have decals printed, so they can be placed on cabs in memory of 44-year-old Patrick Foster.
Four years ago, Foster was shot five times during a robbery in his cab, but despite his wounds, he was able to call 911 and hold down his attacker until police arrived. He died more than two months after he was shot.
Davis wanted to have Foster's picture included on licensing stickers issued by the city of Waukegan, but was told it was not feasible. Instead, he's now collecting money from other cabbies to pay for a privately-funded decal for north suburban taxis, to remind people how dangerous driving a cab can be.
Foster's killer, 42-year-old Darryel Garner of Waukegan, was sentenced to 47 years in prison last week.
