Cab Driver Stabbed During Robbery Attempt In West Ridge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A cab driver was recovering Friday morning after he was stabbed by a passenger during a robbery attempt in the West Ridge neighborhood.

The 32-year-old cab driver picked up a passenger in his Yellow Cab at Western and Devon avenues around 2:30 a.m., police said. After the man got in the cab, he announced a robbery, and displayed a knife.

Police said the man stabbed the driver in the arm and leg. The driver swerved, and the cab hit another vehicle.

"He was just trying to defend himself, and they hit with the knife on his forearm, and on his leg as well," said the driver's friend, Hamza Khazi.

The suspect fled the scene, and the driver was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was treated and released a few hours later.

Police said the suspect didn't take any money, and has not been caught.

Yellow Cab would only say the driver is an independent contractor.
