Pedestrian Killed By CTA Bus On South Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman died Tuesday night after a CTA bus hit her as it was making a turn in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

Police said the woman was crossing the street at the corner of 79th and Lafayette, when a CTA bus hit her as it was making a right turn. The bus was not in service at the time.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released.

The bus driver was cited for failing to drive with due care, police said.

"I saw them [police] leading the bus driver into the ambulance. I could tell he was very distraught, upset -- he was crying and really couldn't really walk," said Adrienne Kennedy, who witnessed the accident.

A CTA spokesperson said they are working with Chicago police as the investigation continues.
