Burst Pipe, Icy Mezzanine Prompt Closure Of Red Line Stop
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Freezing ice on the mezzanine temporarily shut down a Red Line station to northbound trains Tuesday morning on the Near North Side.
Northbound Red Line trains began bypassing the Chicago/State station about 4 a.m. after a busted water pipe caused freezing ice to render the mezzanine too hazardous to allow customers to get on or off the train on that side of the tracks, said CTA spokesperson Steve Mayberry.
Southbound Red Line trains still stopped at the station while CTA personnel at the scene spread salt and sand, Mayberry said.
Conditions improved and service resumed at the Chicago/State station at 6:55 a.m., Mayberry said. Trains were operating with normal service.
