Brush Fire Erupts Along I-94 In Northwest Indiana

(STMW) -- A brush fire burned out of control near Interstate 80/94 in Hammond on Saturday evening but was contained by 9 p.m.

The fire started about 7:40 p.m. behind 7925 Indianapolis Blvd., Hammond Fire Inspector Diane Brzycki said. It traveled east toward the Marriott Hotel but did not reach it or the other hotels.

Eight Hammond Fire Department rigs responded to the scene and remained there late Saturday to extinguish any hotspots, Brzycki added. The fire took out three utility poles and a railroad switchbox in the area.

The cause has yet to be determined, but the Highland Police Department reported five boys in the area, Bryzcki said.

No one staying at the hotels was evacuated, Brzycki added.
