Fire rips through apartment building in Bronzeville

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago firefighters are responding to an extra-alarm fire in an apartment building in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

Chopper 2 spotted heavy smoke and flames coming from the building at 4550 S. Michigan Ave. around 3:30 p.m.

Chicago Fire Department officials confirmed a 2-11 alarm was called in to bring in extra firefighters and equipment.

CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reported the Fire Department went on a full defensive operation to put water into the building from the outside after the roof collapsed.

Real estate records say the historic graystone was built in 1886. It is believed the building was vacant.

The fire was under control by 5:15 p.m. There were no injuries, and the cause was under investigation.
