Nykea Aldridge, Cousin Of Bulls Player Dwyane Wade, Dies In Chicago Gun Violence

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 32-year-old mother of four -- a relative of Chicago Bulls player Dwyane Wade -- was fatally shot while pushing a baby stroller Friday afternoon on Chicago's South Side.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the 6300 block of South Calumet, outside Dulles Elementary School. Police say the victim was pushing the stroller when gunfire erupted.

Chicago Police Deputy Chief James Jones says the victim -- identified by family as Nykea Aldridge -- was an "innocent party to this senseless shooting."

"She was just leaving Dulles School, walking down the street and as she was walking down the street some type of altercation occurred that did not involve her," Jones told reporters Friday evening. "Shots were fired during this altercation, and subsequently she was shot and taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries."

Authorities said the woman was hit in the head and arm by gunfire. She was transported to Stroger Hospital. Family members soon followed. They say Aldridge, a mother of four, was registering her children for classes at Dulles.

Aldridge "wasn't bothering nobody," her aunt, Jolinda Wade, told reporters.

"Just going to register her kids in school, and bullets that fly around and have no name decided to find its way to her head," she said.

Aldridge is the cousin of Wade, who recently joined the Chicago Bulls. Friday evening, Wade tweeted about the "senseless" loss.

"The entire Chicago Bulls organization is deeply saddened by the news of Dwyane Wade's cousin, Nykea Aldridge," the team said on its website. "We send our deepest condolences to the entire Wade family during this difficult time."

A relative took custody of the woman's child. Pastor Edward Jones says Aldridge had recently moved to the area where the shooting occurred.

Police say they are questioning two people in connection with the incident.
