Chicago Police Fatally Shoot Suspect On West Side

(CBS) -- Chicago police fatally shot a suspect on the city's West Side on Monday evening after he allegedly pointed a weapon at officers.

The incident occurred in the 3400 block of West Grenshaw around 7:45 p.m., in the Homan Square neighborhood.

Officers observed a vehicle that matched the description of a vehicle sought in connection with an earlier shooting, police said. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, a man inside fled on foot.

A brief foot chase ensued, and an "armed confrontation" occurred between the suspect and an officer, police said. The officer fatally the suspect, police said. A weapon was recovered at the scene, authorities said.

The offender was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
