One Shot At North Riverside Park Mall, Police Say; Mall Closed For Investigation

NORTH RIVERSIDE, Ill. (CBS) -- One person was shot at the North Riverside Park Mall Sunday afternoon.

Around 12:25 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the lower level of the south end of the mall.

When they arrived they found a man in his 20s suffering from a gunshot wound. The man was conscious and taken to a nearby hospital, police said.

As CBS 2's Steven Graves reported, video showed the chaos inside the mall this Father's Day.

The video from a viewer inside the mall showed men, women, and children looking panicked as they filed into a store. It was not clear if the store was near the scene of the shooting, but North Riverside police said someone shot a man on the lower level of the mall.

Paramedics took the victim, who is in his 20s, to a nearby hospital.

This was the second time in weeks that a shooting has transpired in or near the North Riverside Park Mall.

There was no word late Sunday afternoon on the motive for the latest shooting or whether the victim was targeted.

Amid civil unrest in the Chicago area on Sunday, May 31, cameras caught a shooter gunning someone down at close range outside the Olive Garden restaurant on mall grounds. There had been looting going on at the mall around that time.

On Sunday night, there was an outcry on social media to close the North Riverside Park Mall altogether. People said there have been other violent incidents this past week.

The mall on Facebook confirmed those incidents did happen, but said they were isolated incidents and some ended with arrests. The mall also called the Sunday incident isolated.

The mall will reopen on Monday. No one was in custody in the Sunday shooting as of 10 p.m.
