Boy, 13, Killed, Six Wounded In West Side Shooting

(CBS) -- A 13-year-old boy was killed and six others were wounded in a drive-by shooting Friday evening in the West Side East Garfield Park neighborhood, according to fire authorities.

About 6 p.m., a group of young people was standing in the 700 block of South California Avenue when they were shot by someone in a passing car, CBS 2's Mike Parker reports.

One person was dead at the scene, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman. Relatives identified the fatally shot victim as Samuel Walker, 13.

Walker's aunt, Maribell Ruiz, says the teen would have been 14 next month. She described him as a studious teen and called his death senseless.

Two people were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, two were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in fair condition and one was taken to Saint Anthony Hospital in good condition, fire authorities said.

Ages of the other victims were not immediately known.

Another person was shot but refused medical attention, according to authorities.

Police reported no suspects late Friday.
