Pets Killed In House Fire, Explosion In South Suburbs

(CBS) -- A house explosion and fire in south suburban Oak Lawn injured two firefighters and killed pets who were trapped inside.

The incident began around 4 p.m. Friday at 163rd and Kedvale, alongside Interstate 57.  Neighbors say they heard a large explosion.

"The whole entire block rocked," Debbie Harris said.

The home owner and his family were accounted for an OK, but animals inside the home were killed, authorities said.

Two firefighters were hurt when they were inside the house during an explosion occurred, officials said. They were taken to the hospital.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation. CBS 2 has learned there was ammunition inside the house and propane tanks on the property.
