Girl, 6, Shot In Logan Square

Updated 06/07/16 - 6: 30 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 6-year-old girl was critically wounded Monday night in a drive-by shooting in the Logan Square neighborhood.

The girl was playing outside her home in the 2100 block of North Bingham Street around 8 p.m., when someone drove up and started shooting. Witnesses heard up to 15 shots.

The girl was struck in the back. Her family drove her to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, but she was later transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where she remained in critical condition Tuesday morning.

The house had bullet holes in the front window, and a minivan parked outside also was struck by bullets. Neighbor Simon Fernandez said he stayed indoors when the shots rang out down the street.

"You've got a lot of kids over here; they 're playing around on the bicycles," he said.

Community activist Andrew Holmes said whoever shot the girl should have seen there were children on the front porch.

"You can't say when you discharged that weapon, and you aimed, you didn't see them babies out there. You know you'd have to be blind to not see them kids," he said.

A relative of the girl posted about the shooting on his Facebook page Tuesday morning.

"I pray that God puts His hand on her and protects and comforts her through this time. I pray that she would have a painless and speedy recovery," the family member wrote.

Neighbor Joe Kopera, who lives across the street, said the shooting was all part of a gang feud.

"Gang members hang out there, or party there, and apparently that's what was happening last night. There's a lot of friction between them and the gang on the other side of Armitage," he said.

Kopera said the drive-by Monday night was the third shooting at the same house this year.

"Of course it makes me sick," he said.

Police could not confirm the shooting was gang-related. No one was in custody Tuesday morning.
