Chicago Police Officer Shot In Shoulder, Another Cut, During Foot Chase
(CBS) -- A Chicago police officer was shot in the shoulder and another officer was cut in the hand while pursuing a suspect in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood Monday afternoon.
The officer who was shot -- a nine-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department -- was taken to Stroger Hospital and was expected to be okay.
"He'll be released sometime this evening, hopefully," Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson told reporters outside the hospital.
The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. in the 2300 block of South Trumbull when two uniformed officers in a squad car noticed three individuals acting suspiciously, Johnson said.
He said one of the suspects ran, and the officers pursued him on foot. During the foot chase, one of the officers was shot in the upper body. His partner used a Taser gun to subdue the suspect and took him into custody, said Johnson. The partner's hand was cut during the arrest, Johnson said.
The two other suspects fled the scene; police were still looking for them.
The officer who was shot actually called dispatchers to relay information about the incident.
"(The suspect) ditched the pistol. Looks like I've been shot in the right shoulder," the injured officer said over the radio.
