CTA Bus Crash On Chicago Avenue Sends 15 To Hospital

CHICAGO (CBS)--A bus crash that happened Wednesday afternoon on the border of Chicago's Goose Island and River West neighborhoods has sent 15 people to the hospital, according to Chicago fire officials. None of the bus passengers had life-threatening injuries, police said.

A CTA Route 66 bus traveling west on Chicago Avenue crashed into a pole at Chicago and Peoria around 1:47 p.m. after a black Mercedes driving in the eastbound lane hit a patch of ice, spun out of control and struck the bus as it traveled in the oncoming traffic lane, according to the Chicago Police Department.

The driver of the bus was injured in the crash, but his condition was not known. Two males who were in the car--a driver and his passenger--were taken to Northwestern Hospital. The driver was in critical condition and his passenger also suffered serious injuries.

The CTA's 66 Chicago bus was temporarily rerouted via Chicago, Milwaukee, Grand, Halsted and Chicago, according to the CTA. As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, normal service had resumed.

The front end of the black-colored car that crashed into the bus was mangled in photos tweeted by the Chicago Fire Department.
