6 People, Including 12-Year-Old Girl, Shot At Vigil In Chatham
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Six people were shot in the Chatham neighborhood Wednesday night, including a 12-year-old girl, while attending a vigil for the victim of another shooting earlier in the week.
A crowd had gathered near 75th Street and Rhodes Avenue to remember a 20-year-old woman who had been shot and killed earlier in the week, when rival gang members walked up and opened fire around 8:15 p.m.
"While the memorial was going on, someone decided to put that out on social media, and the opposition to this particular group came through an alley with some weapons … guns they shouldn't have – which is why you see the police so heavily armed – came through an alley and shot up the memorial," activist Jedidiah Brown said.
Police and fire officials said six people were wounded in the shooting. The victims included a 12-year-old girl, a 16-year-old, a 17-year-old, two 20-year-olds, and a 43-year-old woman. The 12-year-old girl was grazed by a bullet, and in "stable' condition at Comer Children's Hospital on Thursday morning. The other five victims were in serious but stable condition at Stroger Hospital and Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
According to Brown, the mother of the man who had been killed in the earlier shooting was among the victims of Wednesday night's attack.
"No regard for life. They shot up anybody who was there. Like I said, unfortunately, even the mother of the individual being memorialized was shot," he said.
No one was in custody Thursday morning.
