Boy Rescued From Downers Grove Pond

(STMW) --A boy is "cold but conscious" after he fell through the ice of a Downers Grove pond and was rescued Tuesday afternoon.

A neighbor near the pond at 71st and Dexter called 911 about 3:35 p.m. after the person heard the boy yelling for help, Downers Grove Fire Department spokeswoman Marsha Giesler said.

Firefighters found the boy trying to float on his back, the fire department said in a release. They initiated an ice rescue and brought him to shore within five minutes.

The boy was "definitely cold but he was conscious," and he was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Giesler said. His exact age and condition were not yet known.

The firefighters had undergone extensive training in case of an ice-rescue scenario, and none were hurt during the rescue, the statement said.

Authorities are warning residents to obey signs warning about dangerous ice, and avoid long exposure to the elements during this severe cold.
