Botched Robbery Leaves 3 Shot In Washington Heights

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A robbery attempt turned into a shootout in the Washington Heights neighborhood late Wednesday night.

CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports three people ended up shot around 11 p.m. in an apartment building in the 1400 block of West 90th Street, including the robbers.

Police said it started when two men approached a 33-year-old man in the second-floor hallway, and tried to rob him at gunpoint.

That man happened to be armed, and pulled out his own gun in self-defense. The robbers and the victim exchanged gunfire, and all three were wounded.

The 22-year-old suspect was shot in the chest. His 18-year-old accomplice was shot in the arm.

All three men were taken to hospitals. Their conditions were described only as "stable."
