Bond Set At $500,000 For Man Accused Of Shooting At Police In Andersonville

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A shoplifting suspect was ordered held on a $500,000 bond Sunday on an attempted murder charge after he allegedly shot at two officers who were trying to arrest him.

About 8 p.m. on Saturday, officers saw 33-year-old Thomas Thompson carrying out a theft at a store in the 5400 block of North Clark, in the Andersonville neighborhood, police said.

Thompson allegedly fired a shot at officers while they tried to arrest him, but no one was struck, police said.

Two officers were injured during a struggle with Thompson, police said.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

Thompson, of the 6000 block of North Ridge, is charged with felony counts of attempted first-degree murder, disarming a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance, police said. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of retail theft.

A judge on Sunday ordered him held on a $500,000 bond, according to the Cook County sheriff's office. He is next due in court Tuesday.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, is looking into the case, a spokesman for the agency said.
