Boil Order Issued For Highwood After Water Main Break

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Residents in north suburban Highwood are being advised to boil their water Tuesday morning after a water main break Monday afternoon caused the city's water to be shut off for several hours.

The City of Highwood issued a citywide boil order Tuesday morning, advising residents to boil any water to be used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth or washing dishes. The city recommends that they bring water to a rolling boil for five minutes and allow it to cool before consumption.

Affected tap water can be used for bathing and household cleaning without boiling, according to the boil order.

The water main break near Sheridan Road and Webster Avenue caused water service to be shut off about 2:30 p.m. Monday, according to a statement from the city. The shutoff affected Webster, Clay Street, Lakeview Avenue and portions of Sheridan.

The break was repaired and water service was restored as of 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to Jeff Harding, the city's director of water treatment. The cause of the break was weather related.

Water sample analysis will be completed within 72 hours to determine whether the water quality has been compromised by the water main break, according to the boil order. The boil order will be lifted once the water quality is cleared.

The city recommends that residents flush building waterlines through the faucets and purge all fixtures and appliances – such as refrigerators, ice makers and coffee makers – of standing water and ice after the boil order is lifted.
