Blackhawks Recall Trevor van Riemsdyk From Rockford

(CBS) The Blackhawks have recalled rookie defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk from AHL Rockford, they announced Friday morning.

Van Riemsdyk has been recovering after having sugery on his right wrist in early April. He was originally expected to be out about eight weeks, which would put his timetable for a return to play in early June. It's not yet known if van Riemsdyk could play in the Western Conference Final that Chicago trails 2-1 against Anaheim.

The move comes at a time when the Blackhawks have been relying heavily on its top four defensemen, seemingly because coach Joel Quenneville doesn't have complete trust in Kyle Cumiskey and Kimmo Timonen following a season-ending ankle injury to Michal Rozsival.

In limited regular-season action of 18 games, Van Riemsdyk was a fifth/sixth defenseman, and he had a plus/minus of zero.

Chicago hosts Anaheim in Game 4 on Saturday night at the United Center.
