Blackhawks-Capitals Winter Classic Matchup To Be Held At Nationals Park

(CBS) We've known for some time that the Blackhawks and Capitals would play in the 2015 Winter Classic somewhere in Washington D.C. And it's long been rumored that Nationals Park would be the site for the sport's premier regular-season game.

On Wednesday afternoon, that location became official, with the NHL announcing the home of the city's baseball team will hold the outdoor hockey contest. It will start at noon CT and be broadcast on NBC.

Located in southeast Washington, south of the Capitol and adjacent to the Navy Yard, Nationals Park is a 41,546-seat venue that opened in March 2008. It has views of the riverfront, Navy Yard and surrounding city landmarks.

Both the Blackhawks and Capitals will be making their second appearance in the Winter Classic. Chicago lost to Detroit at Wrigley Field on New Year's Day 2009, and Washington topped Pittsburgh at Heinz Field on Jan. 1, 2011.
