Blackhawks' Brent Seabrook Named Alternate Captain

By Chris Emma—

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (CBS) – In news inconsequential compared to the biggest story at Blackhawks training camp – the legal situation surrounding Patrick Kane – the team announced that veteran defenseman Brent Seabrook has been named an alternate captain following the departure of Patrick Sharp.

In one of the few remarks on Thursday not related to Kane's status, Seabrook addressed his new status with the team.

"I'm very honored to be a part of the (captain) group up here and wear a letter for the Chicago Blackhawks," Seabrook said.

Seabrook is entering his 11th year with the Blackhawks and has been part of three Stanley Cup championships with the team. The news of Seabrook's honor was announced to members of the team on Wednesday night, upon arrival in South Bend.

Chicago traded Sharp in July, sending him and defenseman Stephen Johns to Dallas in exchange for forward Ryan Garbutt and defenseman Trevor Daly. With Sharp's departure, the Blackhawks needed to fill a leadership void.

"For many years he's been one of those guys I've looked up to and learned from," Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said. "It's great for him to be recognized with a letter. He's been a huge part of our success."

The Stanley Cup defense for the Blackhawks begins on Oct. 7 when they open the season at the United Center against the New York Rangers.
