Black Bear Spotted Again In Indiana

(CBS) -- It looks like Northwest Indiana's newest celebrity, the wandering black bear is fattening up for winter and has plans to stick around, reports WBBM's Veronica Carter.

It's been at Panos Farms in Michigan City four times already, probably attracted to the fact that they make honey there.

Owner Pete Livas says he thinks it's kind of cool, and yeah, it makes a mess with the latest raid happening just a couple of days ago, but he's ok with the bear hanging out.

"He's more afraid of us then we're afraid of him," Livas said.

The DNR says the bear could possibly hibernate around Michigan City. Black bears usually hibernate between late November and late December and biologists think it's not likely he'll go back home to Michigan this late in the year.

It's the first black bear seen roaming around Indiana in over 140 years.
