Black Bear Resurfaces In Michigan, May Be Looking For A Mate

(CBS) -- A black bear has just made history across the lake in Berrien County, Mich.

You might remember that black bear that was wandering last year in southwest Michigan and into Indiana, places where black bears haven't been seen since the 19th century.

He is believed to have hibernated in Berrien County, Mich., and has now awakened, if numerous sightings are any indication.  Jonathan Wuepper, a Berrien County historian and naturalist, says that hasn't happened since the 1860s.

"It's interesting he went back to that area where his ancestors lived: Grand Mere State Park," Wuepper says.

The black bear is believed to be 3 years old. Wuepper says that means he'll be looking for love.

But in that part of the country, he's looking in all the wrong places.
