"He understands the economic pressure that we have been under and the need for economic development in all communities, black and white, and so that is why I am standing with him and I am praying with him and I am hoping that the whole community will look beyond skin color and traditional," Trotter said.

Ron Holmes, campaign spokesman for Senator Dick Durbin, says the two candidates have very different philosophies about reaching out to black voters.

"Jim Oberweis wants to put out a press release every time he meets with somebody black," Holmes said. "The fact is that Senator Durbin travels the state frequently. He is in Quincy today at an African-American church. We don't put out a press release just because he is going to be around black voters."
