Beyonce's Super Bowl Halftime Performance Makes Statement, But Gets Mixed Reception By Some

(CBS) -- The Super Bowl halftime show is still making news today over the performance of a pop diva who wasn't even the "headliner."

Beyonce's performance of her new song "Formation" was designed to send a message.

B-96 morning host Jamar McNeil, known to listeners as "J-Niice," says it's the superstar's entry into the conversation over race in America.

"She did an ode to Michael Jackson in her personal outfit, but from what I understand her dancers did a take on the Black Panther Party uniforms," J said in an interview with WBBM.

He says listeners' reception to the performance has been mixed.

"A lot of people who probably have no connection to those issues are taken aback or are saying 'why are we talking about this?' ... but for a large segment of her audience, who feel a connection to those issues, they're like 'Yeah, Beyonce, you feel like how I feel.'"

Some activists suggest the song and the performance was anti-police, but J says Beyonce was sending a message to her fans.

"By the way, guys, I feel some kind of way about a lot of issues going on in the black community," J said.
