Bensenville Officer Shot While Responding To A Domestic Disturbance

CHICAGO (CBS) – A suspect is in custody after a Bensenville police officer was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance Saturday morning.

CBS 2's Steven Graves reports the officer was in surgery Saturday evening at Loyola University Medical Center.

Someone shot the officer around 1 a.m. Saturday as he was responding to a domestic disturbance at apartment complex on the 100 block of South York Road.

The nature of the domestic disturbance was unclear, but neighbors said a family of three lives in the apartment where it happened.

"I don't know how to express my feelings towards them, but I just know that that family is a really good family, so it does surprise me," Yesenia Cruz said. "I just hope everything gets fixed up and I hope everyone is okay; their family and the cop."

At some point after police responded, neighbors heard about five gunshots.

"We didn't know what was happening. I was personally scared, because I didn't know if we were safe if we had to step out the apartment. We didn't know what to do," Cruz said.

Police said the officer's weapon was holstered when he was shot.

The officer was hit 8 times, but it's unclear where.

Police said the suspect was eventually found hiding in the bushes.

"Some of the cops drove on the grass and everything," said neighbor Jessica Gloms. "It was unbelievable. I mean, it looked like a movie."

On Sunday, the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office announced that bond was denied for Kiante Tyler, 21, who is charged with one count of attempt first degree murder, one count of aggravated battery to a police officer with a firearm, and and two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer.

Tyler's next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 6.
