LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) -- The Chicago Bears have signed veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, general manager Ryan Pace confirmed on Saturday following the 2016 NFL Draft.

"We're fired up about that," Pace said of signing Hoyer.

Hoyer was let loose by the Texans following his one season with the team. He started in Houston's AFC wild-card loss to Kansas City.

Hoyer, an Ohio native and Michigan State product, has also played for the Patriots, Steelers, Cardinals and Browns during his NFL career. He's started 26 games and thrown for 38 touchdowns, compiling a career passer rating of 82.2.

Bears offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains served as Hoyer's quarterbacks coach with the Browns in 2014.

In 2016, Hoyer's expected to compete with third-year quarterback David Fales to back up Jay Cutler.
