Bears Sign LB Sharpton, Release FB Fiammetta

(CBS) The Bears have signed linebacker Darryl Sharpton, they announced Thursday morning. In a corresponding move, they terminted the contract of vested veteran fullback Tony Fiammetta with an injury settlement.

The 5-foot-11, 235-pound Sharpton has started 19 games and appeared in 42 games over the past four seasons with the Texans. In that stretch, he's made 144 tackles. He had 55 tackles in 2013 and has primarily played middle linebacker. He also had special teams experience.

The 26-year-old Sharpton was originally drafted by Houston in the fourth round of the 2010 draft.

The 28-year-old Fiammetta has been dealing with a hamstring, which he aggravated in Monday's win against the Jets. His role in the Bears offense was minimal, as Chicago often uses 11 personnel in which running back Matt Forte, tight end Martellus Bennett and three receivers take the field. Backup tight end Dante Rosario or a backup lineman are capable of being a lead blocker in short-yardage situations if needed.
