Bears Playoff Chase Update: Chances All But Dead

(CBS) The Bears' playoff chances took a huge hit after an ugly 26-20 overtime loss to the 49ers on Sunday, as they'll now need epic failures by other teams down the stretch to have any opportunity.

After the conclusion of Week 12 in which Chicago earned an inspiring 17-13 win at Green Bay on Thanksgiving night, the Bears' playoff chances were tabbed at 20 percent by FiveThirtyEight's advanced model. Those chances have now dropped to 6 percent, according to FiveThirtyEight.

Chicago is 5-7, trailing Seattle (7-5) for the final wild-card spot by two games. Making matters even more bleak is that the Seahawks have the tiebreaker over the Bears due to a head-to-head win in Week 3, so Chicago essentially has to make up three games on Seattle with four weeks remaining. The Seahawks' remaining schedule looks like this: at Ravens, vs. Browns, vs. Rams and at Cardinals.

Chicago would also need to surpass Atlanta (6-6) and Tampa Bay (6-6). The Falcons' remaining schedule looks like this: at Panthers, at Jaguars, vs. Panthers and vs. Saints. The Bucs' is as follows: vs. Saints, at Rams, vs. Bears and at Panthers.

Minnesota (8-4) currently holds the first wild-card spot, with Green Bay (8-4) nudging ahead in the tiebreak for the NFC North lead.

Even if the Bears won out to get to 9-7, their poor conference record may hurt them, as it's an important tiebreaker in many scenarios. Chicago is 2-6 in the NFC.

The Bears' remaining schedule is as follows: vs. Redskins, at Vikings, at Bucs and vs. Lions.
