Bears Cut Jordan Mills, Sherrod Martin, Sign Two To Roster

By Chris Emma--

(CBS) The Bears solidified their 53-man roster Saturday and stayed busy Sunday.

Chicago has cut Jordan Mills, its starting right tackle for the past two seasons, along with safety Sherrod Martin. Additionally, it has claimed guard Patrick Omameh off waivers from Tampa Bay and rookie defensive back Harold Jones-Quartey, an undrafted free agent who played the preseason with Arizona.

In the preseason, Mills showed great struggles and was put into a position battle with Charles Leno, who also struggled. Two-time Pro Bowl guard Kyle Long began working in at right tackle, a trend that began in OTAs in May.

A three-year veteran out of Michigan, Omameh started all 16 games with the Buccaneers at right guard last season. He was released after playing right tackle this preseason, adding to the uncertainty of his fit in the Bears' offensive line.

By adding Omameh and cutting Mills, it's largely possible that Long could make the full-time move to right tackle, with either Omameh or Vladimir Ducasse stepping in at right guard. The Bears return to Halas Hall on Monday, in advance of their Week 1 contest with the Packers, and further clarity to the starting offensive line should come then.

Adding Jones-Quartey gives the Bears depth to work with in the secondary. He had 14 tackles and an interception this preseason with the Cardinals. Martin had an interception returned for a touchdown in Thursday's preseason finale but has been let go.

Sunday's flurry of activity likely ends the Bears' moves and finalizes the roster.
