Bail Denied For Man Accused Of Shaking Baby

CHICAGO (STMW) -- The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating a woman and her boyfriend, who faces felony charges for allegedly shaking the woman's 14-month-old daughter, causing critical brain injuries.

Richard Martin, 22, who faces one count of aggravated battery, was ordered held without bond Friday for the incident that happened about 9 p.m. March 24 at his home in the 7200 block of South Campbell, according to police and court records.

A police report claimed Martin admitted shaking the baby, who suffered subdural hematoma and was forced to undergo brain surgery.

The 14-month-old girl was hospitalized with a brain injury at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police, who did not have an update on her condition Monday afternoon.

DCFS is investigating the baby's mother and her boyfriend for allegations of abuse, spokeswoman Karen Hawkins said. The agency also investigated the mother in May 2013 for allegations involving the same child, but the allegations proved to be unfounded, Hawkins said.

Hawkins and police could not say whether Martin is the baby's father.
