(STMW) -- A baby boy was delivered after his pregnant mother was killed in a hit-and-run in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side Thursday night.

Karla Y. Leanos, 26, was crossing the street on foot in the 4200 block of West Ogden about 10 p.m. when she was struck by a dark-colored SUV, according to police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Leanos, of the 3000 block of South Keeler, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m.

After she was struck, emergency personnel delivered a baby boy, whose condition had stabilized Friday morning, according to a source, who added that a person of interest has been taken into police custody.
