Avon Walk Against Breast Cancer Gets Underway From Soldier Field
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The fight against breast cancer is getting a boost this weekend, as thousands gather for the annual Avon Walk Against Breast Cancer.
Coordinators say this weekend's event is crucial when you consider every three minutes a person is diagnosed with breast cancer, so breast cancer survivors and supporters are flooding the city this weekend to walk-it-out for a good cause.
The two-day walk takes participants up and down Lake Michigan through many of the city's charming neighborhoods and past iconic landmarks like Buckingham Fountain, Wrigley Field, and Navy Pier.
In order to walk, you had to raise at least $1,800, money that will go toward breast cancer research, screenings, and treatment.
The walk is in its 12th year and those who signed-up have the option of walking either a full marathon or a marathon-and-a half between Saturday and Sunday.
The second leg of the walk resumes Sunday morning at 7 when walkers will finish the last 13.1 miles of this event.
