Man Killed In Avalon Park Hit-And-Run

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Charges are pending against a driver who sped away after her car fatally struck a pedestrian Saturday night in the Avalon Park neighborhood on the South Side, according to Chicago Police.

A 51-year-old man was walking in a crosswalk about 11:15 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Stony Island Avenue when he was struck by a southbound red Impala, police said. The car sped away after the crash.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:34 a.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His name was not released Sunday morning, pending notification of his family.

The driver, a 22-year-old woman, has since been taken into custody and charges were pending Sunday morning, police said.
