One Dead In East Chicago Fire

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (CBS) -- One man died in a fire Friday afternoon in northwest Indiana that also put several children in harm's way.

The Lake County Coroner's office said investigators were dispatched to the 3900 block of Deal Street for a fire-related death. The victim was a 60-year-old man extricated from the basement, CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports.

Those in the neighborhood say he was disabled.

A woman tells CBS 2 her several children were saved from an upstairs apartment. The woman was at work when the fire broke out.

As many as six were transported to the hospital, including the children, but they appear to be OK.

East Chicago Fire Chief Emiliano Perez said the fire started at 12:50 p.m. , and was struck out at 1:15 p.m.
