Arlington Heights Non-Profit Collecting Leftover Halloween Candy To Send To Troops Overseas

(CBS) -- As folks gear up for Halloween one area organization is asking for leftover candy, reports WBBM's Mariam Sobh.

Help USA Troops is a non-profit based out of Arlington Heights and they'll be taking the leftover candy and sending it to troops stationed overseas.

Dawn Hedrick founded the organization after her son-in-law, who was stationed in Afghanistan, was killed in 2010.

"My youngest daughter started with a candy drive," she said.

Hedrick says her daughter and friends would go trick-or-treating and donate the candy they received.
"We sent out a whole bunch of boxes to his unit that was actually still deployed there," she said.

Since then, they've expanded to more units in Iraq and Afghanistan and last year they sent more than 150 boxes, Hedrick said. In addition to the candy drive, they send hundreds of boxes of supplies to troops stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
