Arctic Temps Return With Gusting Winds, Blowing Snow

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Monday's snow showers have given way to strong winds and frigid temperatures on Tuesday.

More than 3 inches of snow fell in Chicago from Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning, and while the snow has stopped falling across most of the area, winds of up to 35 mph were producing blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility and covering roads during the morning commute.

While Tuesday morning did not start off as cold as Monday, temperatures were unlikely to get any better than the low teens, and could drop into the single digits before the afternoon.

Wednesday morning could be even colder, with a low around 4 degrees, and wind chills as low as 20 below zero.

Temperatures should gradually rise through the day Wednesday, hitting the low teens by late morning, and the low 20s by the evening.

Thursday should bring a winter thaw, with a high near 40 degrees.
