Animal Shelter Seeking Answers After Woman Who Reported Dognapping Disappeared
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Minnesota animal rescue group was hoping to get some answers Thursday, two days after a woman claimed a dog she adopted was stolen in Chicago, and then she cut off all contact.
The woman – who WBBM is not identifying for now – is a respected veterinarian, according to Minneapolis-based Midwest Animal Rescue & Services, where she adopted the puppy over the weekend.
She told Midwest through someone else that she called police Tuesday after someone snatched the dog she named Cloud out of her car as she was getting gas at Cicero and Montrose avenues in Chicago, near the veterinary clinic where she works.
When asked for a police report number, the woman said she couldn't find it.
Police said that's because no report was made. The gas station where she claimed the puppy was stolen said nothing of the sort happened there.
A person who works at the same clinic said the alleged dognapping was news to the woman's colleagues.
The woman has not responded to repeated phone calls and text messages from WBBM and Midwest Animal Rescue. The people at MARS have grown increasingly concerned about the physical and emotional well-being of the dog.
When the woman was a veterinary student at the University of Illinois several years ago, she reported a similar dognapping, which she claimed happened right in front of her eyes at a dog park.
A police officer who heard about the current case has begun seeking answers on her own time.
