Amtrak Train Hits Vehicle In Riverside
(STMW) -- An Amtrak train struck a vehicle near Harlem Avenue on the border of west suburban Riverside and Berwyn on Thursday, delaying Metra BNSF line trains.
The Amtrak train was running on the BNSF tracks when it hit a vehicle near Harlem Avenue about 2:30 p.m., Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said.
Metra's BNSF line trains between Chicago and Aurora use those same tracks, and were temporarily stopped, the rail agency said. The crash happened near the Harlem Metra station in Riverside.
BNSF trains are running again as of 3:30 p.m., but are moving slowly on a single track through the area, Metra said. Trains are running between 20 and 75 minutes late.
Riverside police say a woman driver and her dog were in the car when it was clipped by the train. The driver was stuck on the tracks because of traffic and tried to back up at the time of the collision.
The driver was transported to McNeal Hospital; her condition wasn't immediately known, but she was alert, police said. The dog was taken to Berwyn Vet Hospital.
