Amtrak Train Derails In South Loop

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three cars of an Amtrak train derailed Monday morning in the South Loop.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said Train 449 arriving from Boston and New York was headed towards Union Station when it derailed at low speed near Taylor and Canal streets around 11 a.m.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, three cars of the train derailed, but no injuries were reported. The train cars that jumped the track are still blocking that one rail as of 5 p.m.

There were 197 passengers and about 9 crewmen aboard when the incident happened.

Several riders and witnesses shared photos and video of the train after the derailment.

Magliari said passengers who were on the cars that derailed were moved to other parts of the train, and arrived at Union Station shortly before noon.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation. The twisted train cars were not expected to impact Amtrak or Metra.
