Amid Concerns, Safe Passage Routes Lived Up To Their Name

(CBS) -- Safe Passage routes made headlines last year, amid those massive school closings and fears over student safety.

With the school year over, a statistic emerges: There were exactly zero serious incidents of violence along the routes.

CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports.

School's out for summer, along a few feet of the miles of the routes dotted with yellow signs.

"Everyone played a role in making sure these kids were safe this year," says Jadine Chou, head safety and security for Chicago Public Schools.

Ten months ago, Tuyona Frazier's child was shuttered out of her neighborhood school. She said she was worried.

This week, she reflected on the success of Safe Passage and said her daughter's school year was a good one.

Chou gives credit to many, including passage workers like Willie Harris.

"I'd say it was a great year this year," he says.

School officials are working on next year's Safe Passage plan.
