Alleged Gangster Disciples Leader Arrested
CHICAGO (AP) -- Authorities have arrested the alleged patriarch of one of Chicago's most notorious street gangs and dozens of his alleged subordinates on drug charges.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says in a Thursday statement that, in all, 35 suspects linked to the Gangster Disciples face charges of possessing and distributing heroin and crack cocaine on Chicago's West Side.
The alleged patriarch is 55-year-old Johnny Herndon. He's also known by the nickname "Goo."
Prosecutors say Herndon's operation sold 135 grams of crack for $5,400 a day. That generated around $160,000 a month. Herndon allegedly invested his illegal gains to accumulate more than 30 real estate properties valued at more than $1.6 million.
U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon calls the arrests part of a "decades' long effort to wipe out drug, gangs, and gang factions."
