Ald. Balcer To Retire; Daley Relative In Line For Council Seat?
(CBS) -- Chicago's 11th Ward Alderman, James Balcer, has decided not to run for re-election, which could pave the way for another Daley family member in the City Council, CBS 2 has learned.
Balcer tells CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine that he's stepping down to pursue treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder stemming from his military service in Vietnam.
Balcer, a former Marine, was awarded a Bronze Star for heroic acts during combat.
Patrick Thompson, a nephew of former Mayor Richard M. Daley and also a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District commissioner, is expected to seek election as Balcer's successor.
Thompson lives in the Bridgeport home once owned by his grandfather, former Mayor Richard J. Daley.
